Frequently Asked Questions

  • What types of scrap metal can be recycled?

Most scrap yards accept both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Ferrous metals contain iron and are magnetic—examples include steel and cast iron. These are commonly found in whitegoods, car parts, and construction materials.

Non-ferrous metals do not contain iron and include copper, aluminium, brass, lead and stainless steel. These are often used in wiring, plumbing, roofing, and electrical components. Some facilities also accept electric motors, batteries and insulated cable.

  • Do I need to remove plastic or rubber before recycling metal?

It’s not always required, but removing non-metal attachments like rubber, plastic, insulation or fabric can improve your payout.

Clean scrap—metal that’s free from contamination—is easier to process and often fetches a higher rate. For example, copper wire that’s been stripped of its plastic coating is usually worth more than insulated copper cable.

While most yards will still accept “dirty” scrap, they may offer a reduced rate to account for the extra processing.

  • How is scrap metal weighed and priced?

Scrap metal is typically weighed using certified digital scales or a weighbridge. The value depends on the metal type, purity, condition and current market rates.

Non-ferrous metals like copper and brass generally bring higher prices than ferrous metals like steel.

Prices can fluctuate daily based on supply, demand and global commodity markets. Some facilities offer per-kilo pricing, while others may offer bulk rates for large loads.

For accurate payments, a certified weighbridge ensures weights are recorded properly and printed out for transparency.
